What really gets me is that some people have never seen either.
Kansas is not meant for permanent habitation.
Kansas is not meant for permanent habitation.
I feel so privileged about how much I have traveled when I think about stuff like this. Have you ever seen a sky arching over you end-to-end, and the only thing that’s keeping you from seeing further is the curve of the Earth? Have you ever seen a night sky when you really know that it goes on forever, free and clear and even the air tastes different because it’s the only thing between you and outer space? Have you ever been in water so deep that for one minute, just for a brief minute, you’re not sure which way is up? Have you ever been in a city so compact with buildings so tall you can’t fathom ever getting out of it? Ever ridden in a public elevator because the whole city is so steep there’s no way to get between blocks on foot otherwise? Ever been in catacombs so complex they’ve never been mapped, so old they warn you if you get off the path there’s no way they can find you again? Ever stood on a cliff, a real cliff over a canyon or an ocean, thinking about the thousands of years it took for water to wear through all the stone, feeling small in stature and in comparison to geologic time? Ever been through city streets so crooked you can technically take three rights and end up going straight? Every where you live has something wild like this, something you take for granted that will blow your mind when you realize it’s a special thing you’ve been able to witness your whole life. Man, the Earth is a glorious place.
Yeah, I don’t see none of that. I see rivers and lakes, sometimes. No mountains or oceans. No cliffs, no canyons.
But you get rivers and lakes! Ever gone to see a river when it’s straining at the banks, or when the water is rushing super fast? Ever gone out first thing in the morning to see the lakes when they’re practically smooth as glass and you know any little ripples are made by real living animals going about their nature business? Sometimes you have to hunt for the cool things in your corner of the world but I promise you they exist
Don’t forget snow! Lots of people have never seen snow
Fireflies.
I want to see fireflies
And the milky way
