“The First time I galloped, I just burst into tears. It felt as close to flight as I was ever going to get, the miracle of human flight. It feels like flying.” – Tom Hiddleston .
(I’ve been meaning to translate the whole thing for fellow fans but I have SO much stuff to study! Therefore, I’ll only insert the most interesting bits – it’s a pretty simple interview anyway. Enjoy!)
Disclaimer: I’m a mere law student and I have never done any studies on translation, it’s something I dabble in for fun. I have done my best for the translation to be accurate, but it is not professional. Take also into consideration the fact that I translated these bits from an interview that was done in English and then translated into Italian for the magazine – words may have shifted in meaning on their journey from Tom’s mouth to here. I hope I have done justice to Tom’s beautifully measured speech as much as humanly possible. Cheers x)

“Traveling is fundamental, it teaches you to observe and evaluate yourself by comparing yourself to others and your surroundings”
(about why he doesn’t really like interviews) “No one is guilty of being famous, but you become an accomplice if you stir up the rumors”.
It bewilders him to speak about his personality; “Once I admitted to sharing my first kiss with a classmate for a women’s magazine. When I read it back, I realised I had never felt that embarrassed”.
“Hamlet is, now more than ever, contemporary in his way of expressing the value of feelings, juxtaposed to social and political contrast, demagogy, oligarchy. It’s the role every actor desires: John Gielgud impersonated him 500 times, in six different productions. Mark Rylance, an actor I admire, in three. For me, it was the first time and the critics that found our work excellent watched it without having a special invitation because the 160 seats that were available have been assigned over three weeks via a ballot system. The proceeds were donated to RADA, that Branagh and I attended, to build student housing”.
But he admits to being attached to the role that made him famous, too. “For fans, some characters become companions of adventures and escapes. It happened to me as well when I was a boy and, being British, my legend was James Bond”. Perhaps that’s where he acquired his dress code, always impeccable whether he’s wearing that which he calls his “uniform” (jeans and a black or blue t-shirt) or his red carpet outfits.
Extremely appropriate in his choice of words, Tom does not hesitate to say there is a sort of consequentiality between the characters he chooses. He explains: “Come to think about it, Hamlet shares several similarities, for example, with Adam in Jim Jarmusch’s film. Our time runs out because we are mortals, and we should remember that both during our good and our bad days. We are not eternal like vampires: fragility is quintessential to us, and it is fundamental to not be destructive, to refuse racism, prejudice, and hatred”.
His troubled characters have been defined by critics as a mix between the Prince of Denmark and Pink Floyd’s frontman. “I love Hamlet’s fragility and strength and the complexity of Syd Barret’s music, a rock star with a melancholic soul that decided to live in solitary confinement, devoting himself to gardening and painting”. A figure he seems to recognise himself into: “I am not searching for a great amount of wealth nor success while doing my craft. Music is extremely important to me in movies because it suggests or emphasizes atmospheres, and I want to reveal a part of the world in each and every single one of my characters”.
“I grew up reading a lot, but also watching Disney movies such as Mary Poppins, Dumbo, and The Jungle Book. I used to watch a lot of them as a boy with my two sisters, that I am very close with. Maybe I like Loki so much because of the memories I have of those movies, which are the precursors of many of today’s blockbusters”. He went to Disneyland for the first time with his family when he was 13 and, for many reasons, he believes that trip to have been significant in his decision to become an actor.
